SUMMER CSA

To Learn what is special and different about the Spiritual Food CSA and what is the difference between the Summer/Fall and Winter/Spring seasons, visit the General Information page.

The 2008 Summer/Fall Season
Season will run from end of May or early June to end of November - 26 weeks

The CSA Share:        There is one share size, which is designed for a couple or small
family. Single people who love good food can also use one
share.  Some people who are single or travel a lot prefer to split
                                     a share with a partner.

From the Sankanac CSA Biodynamic garden, plans include:

>  7-9 different fresh vegetables including 1 or 2 varieties of greens weekly

>  1 or 2 fresh herbs weekly

>  occasional fruit: melons, apples,

(and strawberries if you can get to the farm to pick your own)

The share is rounded out with what we call “supplements” from
            other farms:

>  1 or 2 kinds of fresh fruits weekly

>  Dried fruit about twice a month

Yogurt, cheese and, if we are lucky, eggs regularly

>  Bread or whole grains several times a month

>  Other special biodynamic and organic items

See below for specific items planned.

Our aim is to support and promote Biodynamic farms; we
occasionally offer organic supplements also in order to support
a special farm or for the sake of variety when Biodynamic is not
                                  available

Share Price:          $850 for a 6 month season (less than $33/week)

With Early Bird Registration (Feb 15) share price is $825.

Registration Due Date: CSA membership is first come first served.  As there is a
limit this year on the number of shares we have available,|
register early and tell friends and acquaintances to do so too.
To confirm your registration, payment must be received; we
                                         cannot hold shares.

The Winter/Spring season will open by early August and next
year's Summer season will open in January (or maybe even
December) to accommodate the farm's needs.  Put it on your
                                         calendar now!

Payment:                        Can be a lump sum for the whole season or installments (up to
4). You may divide your share price (either $850 or $825) by
the number of installments (2, 3,or 4) and send all checks at
once,  post-dated a month apart.  See the registration form for
                                        complete details.
Credit cards are accepted with an additional
                                        3% charge to cover fees

Location:                 The main pick-up site is in Bethesda at 4209 East-West
Highway, near downtown and the Bethesda metro station.

There will likely be a pick up in Arlington, VA, (509 North Kenmore
        Street, 22201, 703-528-5950)
Capitol Hill and the Washington Waldorf School
(when school is not in session, they come to Bethesda)

To establish a new site, about 20 members and a coordinator are
needed. Please call for more information.

Share Content

Every season is different. A CSA teaches us to eat locally and according to season, not only Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter but also year by year as food is offered by Mother Nature. Here is a sample of possibilities:

Vegetables from the main farm

.

Supplements:

Apples, Citrus, Blueberries, Blackberries, Strawberries, Mangos, Pears, Plums, Avocados, Lemons, Eggs, Raisins, Dried peaches/apricots, Medjool Dates, Dried Persimmons, Rolled Oats, Rice, Pasta, Bread (5 varieties, freshly baked), Whole Wheat Flour, Baking mix, Raw Cheese, Cookies,  Raw Honey, Lacto-Fermented Vegetables and Sauerkraut, Flax Seed,  Yogurt, Apple Cider Vinegar.

We have been experimenting with the "supplements" and feedback has been very positive. Our hope is to be able to increase the share quantity in order to diminish or eliminate the need to shop at grocery stores during the season.

.
What about volunteer work?
.
A CSA is a community endeavor depending on the cooperative efforts of its members and we do count on your support for about 4-6 hours per season.
The main service needed is setting up on Wednesdays and bagging dry goods.  The CSA also needs help with recipes and food preparation tips, promotion/web listings, coordinating and special projects, and maybe even driving to the farm.  Opportunities also exist to research and write on food and farming for sharing the behind the scenes news with members and the website community.

Please inform us about your preferences on the registration form. For weekly set-up opportunities, sign up in the garage or on our Spiritual Food CSA yahoo group.

.
When can we visit the farm?

Visiting the farm is an important experience for CSA members to connect with the farmer and the land that is their source of nutrition and the forces of life.

  • Farm tour will be offered
  • There are U-pick opportunities at the farm in Pennsylvania, usually in June and early July.
